description
The delightful design of this rare sterling silver punch ladle by the renowned Hester Bateman incorporates a silver half crown coin of Queen Anne. The head of the coin, featuring the profile of the queen and the inscription “Anna Dei Gratia,” is clearly visible in the interior of the bowl, while the reverse forms the bottom of the bowl on the exterior. The design is distinctively Georgian, as many silversmiths of the age utilized coins in punch and toddy ladles such as this. While some believe certain coins were chosen for the sentimental significance of the year, others claim coin silver was simply the most inexpensive option for such pieces. Regardless, the practice lends this Georgian ladle a charm beyond its elegant design. A beautifully twisted baleen handle completes the extraordinary piece.
