description
This outstanding silver covered soup tureen with matching underplate and ladle by Tiffany & Co. is crafted in the iconic Chrysanthemum pattern. Regarded as one of the most prestigious and stunning silver motifs ever created, Chrysanthemum features exquisitely chased floral motifs representing the pattern's namesake flower. The elaborate blossoms are used to incredible effect on this impeccable tureen. From the intricately detailed handles and feet to the scalloped rims of the cover and tray, this set reflects the meticulous and refined artistry of this celebrated pattern.

The design also incorporates a personal engraving: "George W.R. Matteson, from John Nicholas Brown, Harold Brown, and Sophia Augusta Sherman. April 21st, 1888." The brothers Brown and their sister, Sophia Augusta Sherman (née Brown), were the grandchildren of Nicholas Brown Jr. (1769–1841), the namesake patron of Brown University; they were also heirs to the family business, the shipping and textiles firm of Brown & Ives. In their business dealings, John and Harold Brown relied on George W. R. Matteson, the trustee of their father's estate, for advice and assistance. This soup tureen represents the Brown family's gratitude to their business partner and long-time family friend. Matteson's monogram is also beautifully engraved on the underplate, incorporating a myriad of chrysanthemum flowers in the intricate design.

Because of the intricacy and expense of the pattern, few large pieces of Chrysanthemum were ever made by Tiffany & Co. - they were generally reserved solely for special commissions such as this. Of exceptional quality, weight and design, it is a true rarity from this legendary firm.
