Barques de Pêcheurs à Étretat
(Fishing Boats in Étretat)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower right)
Oil on canvas

This color-filled oil by Hugues Claude Pissarro captures the fisherman of Étretat bringing in their daily catch. Renowned for the vigor and vivacity of his brushwork, Pissarro possesses an intuitive understanding of light and color, which permeates his compositions such as this one. Barques de Pêcheurs à Étretat exudes the lightness and vitality of his renowned oeuvre, as the multi-hued vibrancy of the sea is echoed in the ships, cliffs and sand.

A quaint fishing village in Normandy, Étretat served as inspiration for a number of the great painters of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. Claude Monet famously captured the weather-beaten fishing boats and tumultuous sea a number of time on canvas; perhaps the most successful of these paintings is Fishing Boats in Étretat (Seattle Art Museum). Pissarro keeps this tradition alive in the present work, with a palette and style that pays homage to the Impressionists who came before him.

The grandson of the renowned Camille Pissarro and son of painter Paulemile Pissarro, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower cemented his reputation as an artist of renown, and his work has since been featured in important exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece.

The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
