(At Coq Hardi, at Chapelle and Mariette in Mortagne)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower right); inscribed "H. Claude Pissarro / le petit fils / Au Coq Hardy, chez Chapelle et Mariette à Mortagne" (en verso)
Oil on canvas

This extraordinary oil on canvas is a painterly tour de force by the French painter H. Claude Pissarro. The work is a stunning addition to the Pissarro family legacy, which began with Pissarro's Impressionist grandfather, the great Camille Pissarro. Boasting a vibrant Post-Impressionist style, the composition demonstrates Pissarro's remarkable talent for capturing the light and atmosphere of a scene in each and every feathery brushstroke. Under a turquoise-blue sky, Pissarro's France glistens with unmistakable brilliance as he deftly captures the charm of the Normandy town of Mortagne.

Multi-hued trees and captivating cottages fill the large-scale canvas, as Pissarro finds color in the most unexpected of places. Peppered throughout the composition are villagers who appear at one with the kaleidoscopic tones of their surroundings. Heavily influenced by the Impressionists, Pissarro sacrifices detail in favor of atmosphere, an aesthetic effect that evokes an emotional response to this French artist's romanticized vision.

Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower cemented his reputation as an artist of renown, and his work has since been featured in important exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece, which are highly collected.
