description
This one-of-a-kind British cross pendant is a magnificent example of 19th-century workmanship. Five amethysts totaling approximately 43.00 carats are set in the eye-catching piece, and each possesses truly exceptional color. Most amethysts of this size display color that is unevenly distributed through the stone, or even patchy, with the most intense color at the tip of the stone. These examples, however, exhibit a lovely deep velvety purple hue throughout. The cut of the stones is also exceptional considering the age of the piece. Each amethyst is precisely cut to achieve maximum symmetry in the design and showcase the stones highly desirable color. Without the aid of modern tools, only the most skilled jeweler would have been able to achieve such an effect.

The pendant's 18K yellow gold setting is virtually invisible, allowing the maximum amount of light to shine through these natural wonders. Rose-cut diamond collet accents and rose-cut diamond trefoil clusters further adorn the timeless design.

Both crosses and amethysts were particularly popular in England during the 19th century, and the two are beautifully married in the present pendant. The semiprecious gemstone's popularity, in part, was thanks to the discovery of large amethyst deposits in Brazil. While the amethyst had long played a starring role in the jewelry and regalia of royalty, the new deposits made it accessible to the nobility and wealthy merchant classes, and it became a fixture in 19th-century jewelry creations.
