description
This rare and important German saltbox is displays exceptional quality, age and condition. Dating to the 17th century, this box would have been used to store one's precious supply of salt and, most likely, would have been found in the home of an affluent individual. Since antiquity, salt has been used as a form of currency, as well as in religious and social events. Wars have even been waged over salt, including playing a part in both the American and French Revolutions. It is believed that the importance of salt led to the phrase of someone being "worth his weight in salt."
