Lace-winged dragonflies border this exceptional table lamp by Tiffany Studios. The lamp's shade displays a complex, overlapping design of golden dragonflies in a beautiful marriage of nature and geometry. The natural motif continues to the cast bronze base, which features a variation on the ball and claw foot resembling an acorn.

The "Dragonfly" shade was one of Tiffany Studio's finest and most successful designs, available in a range of color combinations on a variety of bases. The design was conceived by Clara Driscoll for Tiffany in 1899 and won a bronze medal the next year at the 1900 Paris International Exposition. Driscoll's innovation lies in the wings of the dragonfly. To achieve their delicate lacy effect, she devised a brass filigree overlay that could be soldered over the glass wings, achieving a more intricate pattern.

Driscoll, a gifted designer responsible for some of Tiffany's most iconic lamp shades, began working for Tiffany in 1887. By 1904, she was the head of the women's glass-cutting department and earned the distinction of being one of the highest-paid women workers in America. The "Dragonfly" design shows Driscoll's commitment to Louis Comfort Tiffany's Art Nouveau aesthetic of simplified forms, harmonious colors and naturalistic motifs. Innovative design, careful execution and intensity of color combine to make this shade among the most exquisite ever created by Tiffany Studios. Similar shades reside in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Chrysler Museum of Art.

A similar lamp is pictured in The "Lost" Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany by Hugh F. McKean p. 195.
