One of the esteemed Raymond Yard's most iconic and collectible designs, the rabbit waiter brooch epitomizes the Art Deco jeweler's unparalleled creativity and craftsmanship. First created in 1929 as a playful poke at Prohibition-era policies, this whimsical brooch quickly became one of Yard's most popular designs with his high society clientele.

Yard is famous for his exceptional workmanship and use of only the highest quality gemstones, and this brooch is no exception. Each rabbit waiter's design varies in the costume or featured cocktail, making each brooch a singular work of art. This exquisite example sports a dazzling magenta jacket crafted of 29 calibre cut rubies and 13 calibre cut sapphires, with black enamel detailing creating a slick shine on his bow tie, shoes and nose. A total of 1.14 carats of diamonds shimmer across the design, even appearing in delightful details such as the champagne bucket's two ice cubes. Hints of green enamel complement the 3 calibre cut emeralds on the end of the waiter's cocktail napkin, and platinum and 18K yellow gold complete the striking symphony of hues and luminosity.

Raymond Yard's rabbit brooch designs quickly became synonymous with his brand—frequently appearing personified as dapper gentlemen, fishermen and even palace guards—but the waiters are certainly the most sought-after and collectible. In the age of American enterprise, the revered New York jeweler was creating one-of-a-kind jewels like this one for famous clients, including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Woolworths and DuPonts. Credited with elevating the Art Deco aesthetic to new heights, Yard's innovative designs and exceptional craftsmanship are truly timeless, continuing to inspire and delight today.

Similar brooches are illustrated in Natasha Kuzmanovic, Yard: The Life and Magnificent Jewelry of Raymond C. Yard, p. 156-157 and the back cover.
