A truly imperial pair, these Sèvres bisque porcelain busts of Emperor Napoléon and Empress Joséphine are among the highly desirable few created during the rulers' lifetimes. Napoléon's visage is based upon the official effigy of the famed leader by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) that now resides at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, while Joséphine is likely based on Chaudet's bust of the Empress at the Royal Palace of Fontainebleau. The striking "herm" form of the busts display an elegant Neoclassical style that evokes the imperial portraits of ancient Rome. This association was of the utmost importance to Napoléon, as the emblems of power from antiquity became an integral part of his attempt to legitimize his reign by linking himself with the great rulers of the past, as well as to promote the arts and economy of France.

Formed of refined white unglazed porcelain, the busts lend these historic figures a truly imperial appearance. To find a matching pair of Sèvres porcelain busts depicting two of the most legendary figures in world history, created during their lifetime, is exceptional.

The Napoléon bust is marked "SEVRES and AB 16 xbre 7 n ° I", while Joséphine is marked "SEVRES and AB. 7 Mrs. 8", each with AB for Alexander Brachard, the head of the Sèvres sculpture workshop
