Oil on canvas

Infused with light and pure colors, this brilliantly hued composition by French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro beautifully captures the calm tranquility of the French landscape. Large in size compared to most of the artist's output, the rare oil on canvas is a stunning example of Pissarro's post-impressionist style and a testament to his incredible technical and artistic skill. With Pissarro's renowned eye for composition, the poetic ambiance of the tranquil scene is captured in each and every brushstroke.

Verdant green fields fill the large-scale canvas, beautifully juxtaposed against the clear blue sky. In the foreground, one finds the subject of the charming tableau, aptly titled Amicalement (Amicably). Vibrantly clad, the affable group present brilliant pops of color against the kaleidoscopic tones of the green landscape.  Heavily influenced by the Impressionists, Pissarro sacrifices detail in favor of atmosphere, an aesthetic effect that evokes an emotional response to this French master's romanticized vision. The grandson of the legendary Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Pissarro's work reveals the lasting influence of the impressionist generation in each and every brushstroke.

Born into a family of artists, including the great Camille Pissarro, Pissarro began painting at a young age, learning his craft from his father. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography, from publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored impressionist works like the present piece, which has been exhibited around the world since 1985 and is highly collected.
