He studied at The Academy of Art in Stockholm and in Dusseldorf Germany. He was one of the early founders of the Onningeby Artist's Colony, and with his wife Nina lived and worked on the island of Aland from about 1886 until 1876 when he then became a teacher and principal at the Finnish Art Society drawing school in Helsinki. In 1892 Ahlstedt became a professor of art at the University of Helsinki, where he taught until 1901.
