Oil on Canvas

This alluring painting by Frederick Ahlstedt depicts a private moment on the island of Aland in Finland. In this tranquil scene, a beautiful young girl gets undressed in a shaded area as she prepares to bathe in a nearby lake. The exquisite Finnish landscape is carefully painted in the nationalist tradition championed by the Onningebykolonin, the famous Swedish-Finnish artist's colony that existed on the Aland Islands between 1866 and 1914. The artists associated with Onningebykolonin were primarily plein air artists influenced by the French Impressionists.island of Aland in Finland. The artist, Fredrik Ahlstedt, was a Finnish landscape artist that painted in an idealized style mainly related to the Dusseldorf School tradition.  He studied at The Academy of Art in Stockholm and in Dusseldorf Germany.  He was one of the early founders of the Onningeby Artist's Colony, and with his wife Nina lived and worked on the island of Aland from about 1886 until 1876 when he then became a teacher and principal at the Finnish Art Society drawing school in Helsinki.  In 1892 Ahlstedt became a professor of art at the University of Helsinki, where he taught until 1901. Ahlstedt's landscapes are breathtaking in their realism and portrayal of a sublime bohemian lifestyle. Available work by Ahlstedt is rare and highly coveted at auction.
