A rare and monumental Wedgwood rosso antico potpourri jar elaborately enamelled in the Chinese famille rose pattern. This wonderful piece retains two of its original lids, one pierced with a pattern of commas and lozenges and the other solid. Wedgwood began decorating its red stoneware with enamelled flowers after Josiah Wedgwood II introduced this peony pattern in 1810. Impressed Wedgwood with "moustache" marks. A similar jar is pictured in The Collector's Wedgwood by Robin Reilly on page 250. Inside the solid lid is a label that reads: To Vera Dowling, Her Great Grandmother's Potpourri Jar. It belonged to Charlotte Austin.
