This rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre vase features the remarkable "Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse" design, one of the most popular created in this enchanting collection. This particular vase features a rare distinction. While most variations on this pattern depict a fairy boy facing the bridge, this vase has two boys boldly facing the viewer instead. The "Imps on a Bridge" design had a catalogue of 15 different pattern numbers and was produced with numerous combinations of color arrangement. This variation, with green imps on a green bridge above blue water against a flame lustre background, is detailed in Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre by Una des Fontaines. Signed with "Wedgwood Made in England" stamp and pattern number Z5481/Z.

The dazzling jewel-like colors of Fairyland vases such as this one are enriched with the addition of metals - such as copper - to the glazes, yielding the fantastical sheen that is characteristic of lusterware.
