A figure sits huddled against the cold atop the cover of this intriguing black basalt cream jar by Wedgwood. Painted with red and white encaustic enamels, this jar is an exceptional example of Wedgwood black basalt, one of Josiah Wedgwood's most revolutionary creations. Developed in the 1760s during his partnership with merchant Thomas Bentley, this rich, smooth stoneware was inspired by the hard, natural stone known as Egyptian basalt and was especially suitable for casting and was used for a myriad of items, including vases and urns.
