This incredible Wedgwood black basalt bust depicts celebrated French Enlightenment philosopher François-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire. One of Josiah Wedgwood's most revolutionary creations, basalt was developed during the late 1760s. This fine-grained stoneware suitable for casting and was used for a myriad of items, including vases, urns, and remarkable sculptural forms such as this portrait bust.
