A beautiful black basalt pitcher featuring a shiny glazed interior by Wedgwood. This important pitcher displays the emblems of the nations of the British Isles in bas-relief. This elaborately decorated jug boasts scrolling foliage framing a clover, thistle, rose and lyre-playing angel, representing the nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Gentle gadrooning and ancanthus leaves complete the classical design. Impressed mark "WEDGWOOD" above impressed "E." Excellent condition.4 3/4" high x 4 1/2" wide

Circa 1835

Wedgwood, like many manufacturers, produced items commemorating historical events. In the early part of the 19th century, commemorative pieces were some of the only new patterns added to the Wedgwood repertory. Items such as this pitcher would have been the only decorative Etruscan ware produced during this time period.
