Crafted of black basalt, this remarkable library bust by Wedgwood depicts the celebrated English philosopher John Locke. Black basalt refers to the fine-grained stoneware that Josiah Wedgwood, inspired by the hard, natural stone known as Egyptian basalt, developed in the 1760s. Today, wares crafted of this beautiful pottery are highly desirable and sought by collectors. Not only is it comprised of one of Wedgwood's signature materials, this bust also boasts the classical style that makes Wedgwood pottery so distinctive.

A nearly identical bust is currently held in the collection of the Wedgwood Museum.
