Eighteenth-century Scottish poet Robert Burns is immortalized in this exceptional black basalt bust by Wedgwood. Widely considered to be Scotland's national bard, Burns was a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and the crafting of this bust indicates the high regard in which he has been held. Black basalt refers to the fine-grained stoneware that Josiah Wedgwood, inspired by the hard, natural stone known as Egyptian basalt, developed in the 1760s. Today, wares crafted of this beautiful pottery are highly desirable and sought by collectors. Wedgwood first began producing busts of famous personages, both real and fictional, in black basalt around 1770.
