Watercolor on paper
A brilliant landscape portraying a serene country villa and lake by Dutch artist Fredericus Jacobus van Rosseum du Chattel. A member of the Hague School, du Chattel excelled in utilizing watercolor to convey the realist style championed by the group. They were heavily influenced by the French Barbizon School, and the beautiful compositions of du Chatttel and the Hague served as a continuation of the realism pioneered by the 17th-century Dutch masters, but with a fresh, contemporary quality that makes these works highly desirable to collectors.
Du Chattel had a natural talent for painting, for there is no record of him receiving any formal training in art. It is thought that he learned by observing the examples of the other artists with which he surrounded himself. Du Chattel is renowned for his incredible dexterity, especially with watercolor. At a time when most artists were using watercolors in combination with oils and such, du Chattel utilized watercolor exclusively, with his favorite subjects being peaceful country villas and summer homes.
