This enchanting work by French artist, Alexandre Rene Veron depicts an ethereal sunset in the historically important town of Auvers-sur-Oise. In this stunning waterscape depicting sailboats on the banks of the Oise river, a vivid sky is painted so that it is illuminated and glistening like a jewel, and the water reflects an incandescent world. Shadowy silhouettes of the docked sailboats evoke a serene and mesmerizing scene.

The town of Auvers-sur-Oise was extremely important to 19th century art as a number of important painters lived and worked there, including Veron, Daubigny, Pisarro, Cezanne, van Gogh, Corot and Daumier and the landscape of Auvers and the Oise river can be seen in many works by these artists.  The city was also the home of Dr. Paul Gachet who treated van Gogh along with many of the above mentioned artists and who eventually collected one of the largest collections of impressionist art in the world and was himself the subject of portraits by both van Gogh and Cezanne. Van Gogh and his brother Theo are both buried in the municipal cemetery of Auvers.

Veron was born in January 1826 in Montbazon, France.  He studied under Paul Delaroche and made his "Salon" debut in 1848.  It was during the zenith of Barbizon painting that Veron became a student of Charles Daubigny and spent much of his career splitting his time between Fountainebleau and Auvers-sur-Oise. Both Daubigny and Veron painted many scenes from the banks of the Oise river finding it peaceful and inspiring.

Today Veron is renowned as a master of plein air painting, and important collections of Impressionist and Barbizon artists are not complete without his inclusion. His work evolved at a time in France where images of the landscape were extremely popular at the exhibitions of the Paris "Salon."   During this time landscape painting was regarded by art critics as the strongest and most vital element in French art. Veron became famous for his views of the French countryside and was particularly renowned for his paintings depicting water.
