In the 19th century, Tunbridge Ware was highly esteemed and nationally recognized for its incomparable marquetry and inlay workmanship. The young Princess Victoria, a frequent visitor to the spa town of Tunbridge Wells where the art form originated, would purchase articles of Tunbridge Ware as gifts for her family. Today, quality examples such as this tea caddy are highly sought after.
