This splendid sterling silver water pitcher by Tiffany & Co., crafted in the extraordinary Japanese style, exhibits the distinguishing hand-hammered finish and applied naturalistic decorations for which this incredible pattern garnered so much praise. Created by master silversmith Edward C. Moore and featuring large-scale, realistically organic forms, vessels such as this were among the most admired pieces at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. In terms of form and craftsmanship, it is clear to see why Tiffany was credited with having the finest silver of the Aesthetic Movement. Base features monogram "M."

The outstanding achievement of these pitchers at the 1878 Paris Exhibition earned a Grand Prize for the company and a gold medal for Moore, and subsequently catapulted the Japanese style to worldwide fame. The style was free-form yet restrained, and was a triumph of the burgeoning Art Nouveau design aesthetic. For his part, Charles Tiffany, the company's founder, was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor of France.
