This splendidly carved cameo glass claret jug, crafted by the renowned Thomas Webb & Sons, is a captivating work of skillfully etched and overlaid decoration. This carafe displays a dramatic botanical motif, with fan palm fronds on one side and an ear of wheat and a butterfly on the other, set against the vibrant yellow hue of the translucent glass background. Crowned by a beautifully decorated gilt silver spout and handle by silversmith Frederick Bradford McCrea, this jug exhibits the incomparable technique and artistry perfected by the Webb glass company. Perhaps the most prominent among all of the highly-regarded glassmakers of Stourbridge, England, Webb was especially known for their incredible colored glass and cameo pieces. Two similar examples, one mounted by the same silversmith, are in The Kent Collection of claret jugs.
