The 19th century was the age of the great exhibitions. Craftsmen from all disciplines were challenged to create the most beautiful and most innovative pieces to display to an international audience that often included nobles and royals from around the world. Furnishings of the utmost quality, like this magnificent sideboard, were created specifically for the international exhibitions. This extraordinary sideboard is attributed to the famed Wright and Mansfield and would have certainly been a showpiece for this esteemed firm. Satinwood, etched ivory, ebony, marble and doré bronze of superior quality, are combined with a classical theme culminating in this Neo-classical masterpiece. Wright and Mansfield were widely recognized for their superb craftsmanship and innovative designs, and the intricate inlay displayed on this side cabinet is, without question, the work of an accomplished artisan. In terms of workmanship, materials and design, this exhibition sideboard is a work of art.

Circa 1860

This exceptional sideboard is pictured in two well-known books regarding antiques including The Antiques Buyer by David Dickinson, page 169, and History of Furniture by Michael Huntley, page 182.

Wright and Mansfield was an important and prominent Victorian firm that produced many of the finest pieces of English furniture ever made. They served as Cabinetmakers to Queen Victoria and several of their pieces are housed and on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
