President Washington and his wife Martha used this large pewter platter during his first term in office at the first presidential residence, the Walter Franklin Home. The platter, along with most of the furnishings in the home, belonged to the Franklin family, but remained in the home for use by the Washingtons during their historic stay. Despite the platter's straightforward design, this pewter serving piece is a significant article of Americana.
The platter is engraved with Walter Franklin's initials and reads on the reverse, "Walter Franklin's Platter/In his New York house/When President Washington/occupied it about 1789."
