The Final Bill

Signed "Wagner Höhenberg" (lower right)
  Oil on canvas

German genre artist Josef Wagner-Höhenberg displays his discerning eye for detail in this beautiful composition. Though his subjects are concentrated on the daily life of everyman, Höhenberg imparts a superior level of realism through his use of light and texture.

Höhenberg specialized in depicting the common man of 19th-century Germany, mostly in public gathering places engaging in work and play activities. He frequented pubs and other meeting spots for his models, preferring to offer a glimpse into the more humorous and relaxed side of everyday life.
