The Emperor Presents the Iron Cross to the Heroes of Nowo-Georgiewsk

Signed "Ernst Zimmer, Bamberg"
Gouache on paper

This painting is illustrated in Wie wir unser Eisern Kreuz erwarben by E. Frhr. V. Dincklage-Camp, 1919.

This commemorative post-battle painting by German artist Ernst Zimmer, is a stunningly detailed genre scene, utilizing a brilliant color palate and excellent draughtmanship. The scene depicts Willhelm II awarding the bravery of his soldiers at the Eastern front of the battle on August 20, 1915. Behind Willhelm are several historical figures, including General Field Marshall von Hindenburg, Ludendorff, General von Beseler, Prince Joachim, Prince Oskar and General von Falkenhayn.

Zimmer originally began his artistic training in porcelain painting. This changed after he attended the Danzig School of Art, and soon after, began working as an illustrator in Bamberg.

Canvas: 20 1/2" high x 27 1/2" wide
Frame: 31" high x 38 1/2" wide
