De Borromeïsche eilanden (The Borromean Islands)

Signed and dated "Firmin Baes 1902"

Oil on canvas

The Borromean Islands glow with an unworldly beauty in this magnificent landscape by Belgian Impressionist painter Firmin Baes. This stunning oil on canvas captures these enchanted islands in Italy's Lago Maggiore with saturated color and exquisite detail. There is given a visual treat, from the exuberant hues of the trees to the calm tones of the lake.

Known for landscapes, still-life and intriguing portraits of women, Baes was born in the Brussels suburb of Sint-Joost-ten-Node in 1874, as the son of Henri Baes, a decorative painter and lecturer at the Brussels Academy. He had two sisters, one of whom married the painter Franz van Holder. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Brussel under Léon Frédéric (1856-1940), and was a member of the Patte de Dindon circle of artists and intellectuals, which focused on joint atelier work rather that joint exhibitions. He was also considered a virtuoso with pastel, sometimes to the point of abusing his talent. He died in 1945.
