This exceptional gold snuffbox is a work of proficient Swiss artistry. The box has elaborate gold scrollwork along the border. Snuff boxes were manufactured in France, England, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland. The majority of these boxes were fashioned for the functional purpose of holding snuff, or powdered tobacco. In addition to serving a functional and social purpose, gold boxes were also considered a fashionable accessory, and were often selected to complement the owner's couture.
