This important Swiss étui exhibits a graceful Neoclassical style. A symphony of exquisite enameling laid upon yellow gold, this delicate case boasts four intricately hand-painted portraits, attesting both to the affluence of its owner and the incredible skill of its maker. Charming and discreet, this étui is a highly desirable treasure.
Named from the Old French word "estuier," meaning "to keep or hold," an étui is a very versatile item. These ornamental cases could be made of any material, from precious metals like gold or silver, to exotic materials such as tortoiseshell or shark's skin. Though many were used for more clandestine reasons, some also served the more practical purpose of holding small items such as scissors, thimbles, bodkins and needles, makeup pencils and even a doctor's lancet. Often carried by affluent members of society, étuis such as this were once used to hold secret messages. Confidential notes would be tucked inside and the box then would have been sealed with wax for optimal security. To find such a delicate object still in such beautiful condition is extremely rare.
