This extremely rare and remarkable silver-mounted Spanish commode features delicate sterling silver detailing created from fine Spanish silver. Classically inspired mountings depicting cherubs, garland and scrolling foliage are crafted with the utmost detail. Formed of beautifully lacquered burr walnut and satinwood, the commode is accented with detached, ebonized columns with silver and silvered bronze facets and an ebonized top. Furniture detailed in silver was made exclusively for the affluent in the days when the nobility and members of the upper-class amassed enormous wealth. The superfluous nature of such exquisite decoration was intended to express rank as well as prestige. In times of war and economic turmoil, the silver from these astonishing pieces was removed and melted down to create silver currency. Very few silver-mounted furnishings were ever created, with a miniscule amount of them surviving the tests of time. This precious commode represents one of only a handful known in existence.
