This exquisite set of six Sheraton-period, Cuban mahogany single dining chairs embody the classical grace of this cherished craftsman's artistry. Subtle design elements inform these seats, from the curved paneled top rails, reeded uprights and pierced lattice-work crowning stuffed-over seats, to the square tapered legs ending in spade feet. Sheraton furniture is, without fail, impressive in its elegance and attention to detail, and these chairs beautifully illustrate the highest level of fine English cabinetry.

Time alters fashions and frequently obliterates the works of art and ingenuity; but that which is founded on Geometry and real Science will remain unalterable. -Thomas Sheraton

Though he is often credited with introducing the "Sheraton" style of furniture, Thomas Sheraton (1751-1806) only worked as a cabinetmaker for a very short time and didn't actually craft much furniture himself. Though he was well versed in the techniques of cabinetmaking and may have even been trained as such, Sheraton devoted most of his time to the innovation of furniture design and, after 1793, indicated his profession as a teacher of perspective, architecture and cabinetmaking. But, for the most part, he was a designer of furniture and it was his immensely popular pattern book, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, which first appeared in 1791 and a second volume in 1794, which influenced an entire generation of English cabinetmaking. Today, Thomas Sheraton is considered among the greatest furniture designers in history and his influence over the past 200 years has been far reaching.
