The last warm rays of the summer sun fall upon this quaint Michigan village in this superlative landscape by British artist Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond. The combination of broad brushwork and brilliant, yet natural hues relate the serenity and inherent beauty of the scene.

Knighton-Hammond initially began on a career path in watch making while studying at the Nottingham School of Art in the evenings. In 1900, he left his apprenticeship with just over four months left to completion to pursue a full-time career as an artist and continue his studies at the Westminster School of Art. He eventually traveled to Paris and Venice to further his training.

Knighton-Hammond is best known for his industrial and society portraits, but it was his landscapes that generated a great deal of attention, garnering him multiple commissions, society memberships and exhibitions. His most notable commission came when he was hired by Herbert Dow, owner of Dow Chemical, to paint several landscapes featuring his Midland, Michigan plant, completing 30 oils executed between 1920 and 1921. He enjoyed a highly successful career, with his paintings being collected and admired by American industrialists, the Greek Royal family and members of the English nobility.
