The zolotnik is the Russian unit of measure for precious metals, just as the troy ounce is used in English-speaking countries. In the sterling silver standard, pure silver is notated as 1000/1000, while the Russian equivalent is 96/96. Sterling silver is 925/1000, or 92.5% pure silver. In the case of this silver stamp, 88/96 would translate to 916/1000, or 91.6% pure silver.
