The Rumble in the Jungle World Heavyweight Boxing match of 1974 is considered the greatest sporting event of the 20th century. Muhammad Ali won the bout against George Foreman to regain the title, and many experts credit his win to his use of the "rope-a-dope" technique, in which a boxer leans against the ropes allowing their opponent to essentially exhaust their focus and energy. Shortly after the Zaire bout, Ali endorsed a line of jump ropes coined "Rope-a-Dope" in homage to his boxing strategy. This rope is housed in a shadowbox with the original brass mold of Ali's signature used on the rope handles. An image of the original package and one of Ali training with a jump rope serve as a backdrop to this fascinating piece of sports memorabilia.

From the private collection of boxing promoter and telecommunications expert Henry "Hank" Schwartz

Did You Know?
Though initially thought of as simply a child's game, jumping, or skipping rope has long been heralded for its tremendous cardiovascular benefits, especially in the sports world. A jumper can gain the same benefits as running an eight-minute mile in just 10 minutes of active jumping without the joint damage normally associated with running, since the user's weight is distributed through the balls of the feet instead of the heel.

Circa 1975

Shadowbox: 17 1/4" wide x 13 1/4" high
