This rare and enchanting two-light candelabrum is a shining example of 19th-century interior lighting. Crafted of bronze ormolu in a luxurious Rococo design, the candleholder also features a wooden screen, framed in ormolu and embellished with a gilt Japonism-inspired design of a butterfly and flowers, that adjusts to the height of the candles as they burn. When the candles were lit, this screen shielded the eye from the harsh direct flame, and reflected the light back onto a wall, creating a softer light that illuminated a larger area. Candelabra like this first appeared in the late 18th century and still convey an air of elegance and sophistication.
