Exquisite enameling coupled with beautiful gold work distinguishes this mid-19th century Renaissance Revival crucifix pendant by Italian jeweler Carlo Giuliano. Black, red, green, blue and white enamel is bordered by delicate "ropetwist" engraved gold. While the front displays the applied gold figure of Jesus, the reverse is adorned in a chased foliate motif. A total of five lovely white Baroque pearls are suspended from the arms and base, effectively adding grace and elegance to this wonderful piece.

Carlo Giuliano (1831-1895) was an Italian goldsmith who moved to London around 1860. He established a workshop in Frith Street where he created elegant, high-quality pieces inspired by the Renaissance. His oeuvre is comprised of works that feature his unique Renaissance Revival style, and he often employed ancient techniques, including various forms of enameling, to achieve his singular style. Giuliano's jewelry creations caught the attention of British Royals. He is believed to have made a black and white enamel mourning pendant for Queen Victoria upon the death of her son. King Edward VII and the Empress Victoria were said to have been regular patrons, and Giuliano was reputed to have cleaned and restrung Queen Alexandra's prized pearls.

The pendant is marked with Giuliano's "CG" monogram in an oval field on the reverse.
