This exceptionally rare and stunning pair of Renaissance paintings is attributed to Italian artist Bartolomeo di Giovanni. Active for only a 21-year period between 1480 and his death in 1501, the artist demonstrates his tremendous talent for expressing the depth and richness of detailing that dominated Renaissance art. Entitled Mary, Mary Magdalene and St. John at the Cross, this duo was almost certainly an altar piece commissioned by a private patron, a common practice during the High Renaissance (1475-1525). These patrons would then use these masterful artworks for either their own private chapels or as a gift to the Church. Full of emotion and adoration, di Giovanni imparts an incredible level of passion and perspective seen by only the most gifted artists of the period.
Bartolomeo di Giovanni was a talented artist of the late 15th century, most noted for his religious compositions. He received his training from two major figures in Renaissance art: Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449 - 1494), who taught the famed Michelangelo, and Sandro Botticelli (1445 - 1510). Giovanni's work was so praised and highly regarded, that he was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to execute a wall fresco in the Sistine Chapel.
