A beautifully executed ivory triptych featuring scenes of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. These religious objects were one of the earliest forms of Christian art. The use of the number three, considered a significant number in the Christian religion (symbolizing the Holy Trinity) has been utilized as a standard form for altar paintings, stained glass windows and carved works of art that include the triptych.
