This astounding Art Nouveau bed is a symphony of organic enchantment. Crafted of wrought iron with decorative iron and wood panels, this majestic bed is composed of a headboard, footboard and sides, with flowing lines artfully arranged in a naturalistic fan motif. The wooden panels, adorned with fantastical creatures and mother-of-pearl accents, add to the bed's natural allure. Art Nouveau furnishings are among the most fascinating furniture on the market today. Though smaller pieces have been found, large items such as this magnificent bed are highly desirable and exceptionally rare. With the exception of the magnificent Art Nouveau beds housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, this is arguably the most extraordinary example of Art Nouveau furniture in the world. The bed can accomodate a California king size mattress. Circa 1900 81" wide x 87" deep x 86 2/3" high Art Nouveau is instantly recognizable for its fluid and organic motifs, with curvilinear lines reflecting the asymmetrical patterns and objects found in nature. An avant-garde style that emerged in the early 1880s, it received widespread popularity almost simultaneously in Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, and America. The movement grew from a love of natural forms and Eastern art, as well as a rejection of the increasing use of machinery in furniture-building. Though most are familiar with the movement because of the exceptional jewelry & glass designed by makers such as Louis Comfort Tiffany and in the advertising posters created by artists like Alphonse Mucha, Art Nouveau influenced every kind of domestic art, including furnishings, decorative art and architecture. This complex style also embraced elements of the exotic and the fantastical in new and elegant ways. Beautifully exhibited by this majestic bed, these elements combine to form a work that is at once vibrant and elegant.
