This incredible fossilized hadrosaur egg dates to the late Cretaceaous Period, which occurred 85 to 65 million years ago and was the last great age of dinosaurs. This particular species is known as the "duck-billed" dinosaur for the characteristic facial structure that is similar to modern ducks. Hadrosaurs were large herbivores that roamed areas of North America, Europe and Asia. It is estimated that they weighed anywhere from 3.5 to 5 tons and soared over 40 feet in height. They are commonly thought of as social creatures that took great care of their young, even after hatching. Evidence to this fact was found in Montana in 1978 when paleontologists uncovered a fossilized mother still sitting on her nest of eggs.
5 7/8" high
It was discovered that the mother hadrosaur would create a crater-like nest in the ground with eggs carefully arranged in a circular pattern. Several such nests were in close proximity to the discovery, which suggests that the gentle giants both lived and nested as a herd.
