Playing Dice

Signed "Fritz Wagner Mch" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

The incredible talents of German genre artist Fritz Wagner are evident by his realistic portrayal of a friendly game in this work, entitled Playing Dice Ranked among the great 19th-century German artists, his skillful draughtsmanship and beautifully rendered figures distinguish his magnificent canvases.

Wagner specialized in depicting the common man of 19th-century Germany, engaging in leisurely activities in public gathering places. In Playing Dice, four gentlemen engage in a game of chance, enjoying wine and a pipe, as another man observes. Their emotive faces and detailed dress give the impression that they are common folk, perhaps relaxing after a long days work. The interior is rustic yet inviting, displaying Wagner's gift for using atmosphere and soft color to create a scene that engages the viewer.
