Parisian Street Scene

Signed "E. Galien-Laloue" (lower left)
Gouache on Paper

Eugene Galien-Laloue is best known for his picturesque representations of Parisian streets during the Belle Epoque. Born in Paris with the name Eugene Galiany, he later changed it in 1877 as a tribute to his teacher Charles Laloue. A trained architect, Galien-Laloue's renderings of Paris contain a detailed perspective that raises him above any other street scene painters.

Galien-Laloue's works were highly regarded among Parisians as well as tourists for their postcard-like attributes. Laloue (also known as Jacques Lievin) served as a military illustrator during the Franco-Prussian War and World War I, creating exquisite watercolors. Today his beautiful works, especially his gouaches, are treasured by many as artistic jewels.
