This handsome pair of portraits were executed in the manner of British portraitist Charles Baxter. The artist is best known for his tender portrayals of women and children, rendered with a poetic elegance found in quality, early-18th century portraits.
Baxter exhibited regularly at the Suffolk Street Gallery and the Royal Academy from 1839 to 1872. In 1842, the artist was elected to the Society of British Artists, in which he exhibited from 1843 to 1878.
