This extremely rare and important pair of George III knife boxes was crafted in the distinctive manner of Thomas Chippendale, the most respected English furniture designer and maker of all time. Comprised of flame mahogany and fitted with exquisitely pierced and chased silver furnishings, these boxes boast an incredible serpentine form and detailed inlay. Beneath each sloping lid is a fitted interior, with individual spaces for up to 52 knives of various sizes. The intricate decorative work also extends to the inside, with an inlaid ornamental star on the interior lid, checker-banded edge moulding, and a vibrant red-wash, all of which are hallmarks of Chippendale's finest work.
Mounts feature maker's mark CW and post-1784 duty mark.
Circa 1785
8 7/8" wide x 11" deep x 15" high
It is most exceptional to find such a fine pair of knife boxes in which the same great care was taken to perform the inlay work on the interior of the boxes as it was on the exterior. Further, the addition of such wonderful silverwork on the exterior of the boxes makes them a true study in superior 18th-century craftsmanship. That they have survived more than 200 years in such superb, original condition, while many knife boxes were converted to suit other needs, is testament to their quality and outstanding beauty.
