An extremely rare pair of Celestial and Terrestrial table globes of a remarkable small scale by the renowned English globemaking firm of Newton & Son of London. Though small in size, these 5-inch globes display a tremendous degree of intricacy, with geographical and astronomical landmarks rendered in rich detail. Resting on their original turned mahogany pedestals and held within brass meridien crescents, these globes are a wonderful example of Newton & Son's exceptional handiwork. The firm of Newton & Son is considered among the leading manufacturers of fine 19th-century globes and they are well represented in museums around the world. An almost identical Celestial globe can be found in the permanent collection of the prestigious National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England and is pictured in Globes at Greenwich by Elly Dekker. An advertisement by Newton showing this particular model is also pictured. Wonderful globes such as this are rarely seen in pairs and even fewer can be found in such pristine condition.
