Opal
Eighty-nine Australian white opal beads display a veritable rainbow of glistening hues in this stunning necklace. Separated by elegant rock crystal rondelles, the opals graduate from 4mm to 11mm and weigh approximately 250 total carats. Opals are not cut into beads very often, as they are usually found in thin layers, and bigger deposits are extremely rare. Cutting the round structure also creates a great deal of excess- about 90% of the rough opal is cut away to create just one bead! To find 89 all-natural, matching beads of this exceptional quality is exceptional.
Opals are truly the stuff of legend. Revered for thousands of years by many cultures and once described by famous Roman author Pliny as combining the best possible characteristics of the most beautiful of gemstones, opals were relatively rare until the mid-19th century, when the first opal blocks were found in Australia.
