On the Mediterranean Coast

Signed "Rubens Santoro 87" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

This vivid and detailed landscape by Italian artist Rubens Santoro beautifully captures the allure of the Mediterranean coastline. Santoro traveled extensively throughout Europe, and was highly respected for painting its most prominent cities with outstanding technical skill. He is best known for his picturesque portrayals of Italian coastal scenes, executed with a most intense level of realism and beauty.

Born in Mongrassano, Santoro had a successful academic career studying at the famed Naples Academy under Giovanni Battista. Upon his graduation, the artist traveled extensively throughout Southern Europe, visiting the most scenic locales of Turin, Venice and Rome and using their breathtaking views as inspiration for his paintings. In his later years, Santoro directed his skilled eye towards Northern Europe, depicting urban epicenters such as London and Paris.
