Oil on canvas

Rendered with superior precision, a nymph dominates this garden scene by French academic artist Guillaume Seignac. His works are heavily based in the classical, with nymphs, muses and Greco-Roman gods and goddesses often the subject matter. In terms of style, Seignac's paintings are perfect examples of the forms favored by the Paris Salon and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during that period.

Seignac was active in the late 19th century, quickly receiving world recognition at a time when most art connoisseurs focused on the works produced by Italian Renaissance masters. His technique and subject matter reflect the tremendous influence of his principle mentor, William Bouguereau. He exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon, and his meticulousness and keen sense of balance and color allowed Seignac to win numerous medals, including an honorable mention in 1900 and a Third Class in 1903.
