The Minton pottery, established as Mintons Ltd. in 1793 in Staffordshire, England, traded under the name Minton & Co. from 1845-1873, then under the name Mintons, Ltd. again in 1874. The firm is known for its high-quality porcelain and earthenwares as well as fine pieces of majolica. This desk set reflects the taste for late 18th-century French porcelain favored among the upper classes during the Victorian era. Mintons renditions of this "Sèvres-style" porcelain were so accurate and of such extraordinary quality, even today, experts often mistake it for Louis XVI porcelain.
